How to Break the Habit of Overeating and Start Losing Weight

There are many people out there with weight management problems resulting from bad habits such as overeating. Bad eating habits are usually responsible for overeating which contributes to excessive caloric intake.

Most poor eating habits begin small and are unnoticeable. Eventually your poor eating habits may lead to problems with weight gain. Poor eating habits may also result in the consumption of foods low in nutritional value just to satisfy their craving for food. Once these habits are established it can be hard to break the cycle.

Many people who are overweight have a number of habits that all play a role in making weight management difficult.

Emotional states also play a role in the eating habits of all of us. Everyone is unique and may find they have poor eating habits when they are happy, sad, depressed, lonely, or stressed. We may be totally unaware of the changes in our eating habits, which makes management more complicated. We all tend to engage in activities that make us feel better.

So how do we go about changing these bad eating habits?

It is important to realize that many weight problems are related to bad habits and taking the right steps to eliminate or change these bad habits will help in your attempts to lose weight.

The first step in the process is accepting that overeating is contributing to your problems with weight management.

It is important to perform a self evaluation to help you understand what events or situations trigger your overeating.

Write down what is going on in your daily life during times that you tend to overeat.

Write down the types of food you reach for when you are overeating. We frequently will consume comfort foods that are of low nutritional value and contribute to continued overeating.

Try changing your comfort foods with those of higher nutritional value to satisfy your appetite and eliminate the side effects of consuming foods of poor nutritional value.

Take a look at what you are doing when you have a tendency to overeat. If you find that you overeat when hanging out watching television or at certain times of the day try changing your routine or finding other activities to do.

There are many other factors that go into the evaluation of someone that has weight management problems including genetics, activity level, metabolism, and caloric intake.

It is important to remember that decreasing your intake or burning 500 calories per day will result in a loss of one pound of weight per week. Another way to look at it is decreasing your caloric intake 250 calories and increasing your activity level enough to burn 250 calories will result in the loss of one pound per week. This is a great bench mark to use in establishing your weight loss plan and goals.

We are all creatures of habit and it can be hard to break unhealthy routines when we are busy multitasking in our day to day lives. It is important to periodically perform a self analysis to determine if some of our habits have the potential to cause us long term harm. It becomes harder to break bad habits as we age; therefore, it is important to spot them early and start taking action to eliminate them or change them into healthy habits.

If you try to change everything at once you are more likely to get frustrated and give up. Try making small changes, a little at a time, and you will find that you are less overwhelmed and more successful with your weight management goals.
